The Shepherd King David had plenty of opportunity to gaze at the night sky. In his night watch he gazed at the countless stars lighting the sky wondering at how amazing and awesome God’s power is. As he scanned the vastness of the heavens, he felt humbled by the beauty and majesty of God’s creation. The shepherd mused how insignificant a mere mortal like him, when compared to the glorious power of the Creator. He wondered what are mere mortals that God should think about them, mere human beings that God should care them.
What is man when compared to the great indescribable power of God. How utterly small he is, how insignificant when set before the vastness of the skies and the glorious works of creation.
When we consider how the glory of God shines in the upper world, we may well wonder He should regard or take any notice of so mean a creature as man.(Benson)
Perhaps we have forgotten to look at the heavens and see where we stand in the presence of God. We have been too preoccupied and self-contained in our human affairs that we think the world revolves around us.
In his stargazing the shepherd David called to the Almighty, “Lord what am I that you would mind me? Why would you care for me?”
In comparing himself with the host and the vast array of marvelous creation he found himself unworthy of God’s attention, and yet God is truly mindful of him.
