THE RICH MAN'S LAST WISH

There was a very wealthy man who in his old age lay sick and near death. He had summoned all the best doctors and specialists but all were of the same opinion that nothing else could be done to extend the rich man’s life. They advised the rich man’s family to give him the best care and attention and grant  his every wish in his final days.

His eldest son asked him what is it he wanted to have, and to just say the word. The old man sighed, for he had everything this world could offer, had been to places which others hadn’t seen in their lifetime, and had experienced all the pleasures there is unimaginable.

With a great deal of effort he whispered to his son, “ Two things I wish now that I am about to depart, first,  a good night’s sleep, second, a clear conscience.”

All his life, this man was miserable. All his life he never had a good night’s sleep; and all his life his conscience bothered him without end.

The Wisdom Book in the Holy Scripture teaches us that ultimately, wisdom and understanding will be more rewarding than wealth.

“Happy is the man that findeth wisdom, and the man that getteth understanding: for the merchandise of it is better than the merchandise of silver and the gain thereof than fine gold.’ (Proverbs 3:13-4)

Wealth and wisdom aren’t incompatible. One can be wise, wealthy and happy. One can be wise poor and happy. And one can be wealthy, foolish and unhappy.
